CHAPTER 1: WHAT I MEAN

To begin with, let's take a look at some of the words used frequently in the context of road safety. We often notice people's inability in recognizing the appropriate meaning of these words, which results in fatalities. So let's try to understand these important words before proceeding further.

Accident Prone Area
Sometimes there is a particular patch on the road where accidents occur repeatedly and regularly. This area is declared to be an Accident Prone Area by the law enforcing agencies. Such a declaration warns the road users to be careful while driving through that area and thus warning them of the danger.

Anti Situations
An anti situation is a condition in which safe driving is not possible. A mature driver always ignores driving in an anti situation for e.g., if there is a heavy rainfall in the night and there are no street lights on the road then it is an anti situation.

Bend
When there is a turn in the road and such that particular stretch forms an angle, which is not more than 90°, it is called a bend. When the turn is in the shape of double 'U' in opposite directions, it is called hair pin bend and if the bend is in right side it is called right hair pin bend or similarly, when the curve is in left side it is called left hair pin bend.

Blind Turn
A blind turn can be defined as a turn in the road that a road user on one side of the turn is unable to see the other road users on the other side. It is usually caused by an obstacle, which restricts the vision of the road users.

Black Spot
In our daily usage, we use the term 'black spot' to refer to a problem area that constantly causes trouble. Similarly, in motor vehicle language, this term is used to refer to an Accident Prone Area where accidents take place repeatedly despite numerous measures taken to avoid them. The law enforcing agencies identify and declare the same for the benefit of the road users.
